Muscle, Joint or Soft Tissue Injuries related to Sports

Most injuries or performance issues in sports do not require surgery.  Muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, fascia  are areas of soft tissue injuries that may get better with self-treatment.  As a sports medicine physician and as a specialist in understanding movement, training, and functions of the human body, we can assist you in navigating your problem and recovery.  We understand nonoperative and operative interventions in sports.  Whether you need imaging, testing, surgery, physical rehabilitation or just modifications you can do in a home program or training, we can help you.

Acute Sports Concussion

Acute sports concussion continues to be an injury common in sports, or in just being active (ex. falling off skateboard).  Quick assessment and early treatment provides the best trajectory for recovery and return to sports.

A sports medicine physician can assess the areas affected in concussion injuries and create a treatment plan with you, refer, and educate about some of the misconceptions in concussion. Additionally, as a physician specialist we consider all aspects of concussion, and if other pre-existing or overlapping issues that mimic concussion symptoms.

Remember:  a concussion can occur without a loss of consciousness.  See your physician quickly to start treatment and avoid prolonging your recovery.

Sports Evaluation

Sometimes movement patterns change and training leads to imbalances in muscle firing or joint mechanics.  Sometimes you can’t define why, but you know ‘something is different’.  Sometimes after an injury you cannot achieve the same movement or strength as prior to the injury.  At Sports Med Navigator we understand sports movement, body functional movements and recruitment, in addition to having experience working decades in multiple sports from observation and coaching athletes.  Consider an appointment if any aspect of your sport is ‘off’.  We can see things you may have missed and a one time assessment/evaluation is enough to empower you to improve your performance.

Have you trained in your sport for decades but have had an injury, or time away from your sport and the prior training is not getting you back to your prior performance level?

Have you started or want to start a new sport but are not sure if your body needs specific treatment or training to maximize your function?

Is there something ‘off’ in your sport but not able to determine what or why?

Second Opinion

Sometimes you just want more information, or have several options of treatment to consider for your sports injury or performance issue.  We are here to help you.  By providing all of your prior treatment records, imaging and test results, reports, and specific questions, we can assess and examine you to help you navigate and provide another expert assessment of your current status.

Sometimes you seek a detailed, descriptive and comprehensive assessment with a treatment plan after providing all of your medical information, results, treatment, et cetera.  We can also assist in this type of second opinion.

If you have seen multiple specialists, tried many treatments, and are still unclear on next steps, a second opinion may help

If you have an acute injury, but have been given numerous treatment recommendations and don’t understand how to discern how they will help or if you should do all or some, a second opinion may help

These appointments are longer than the standard care at Sports Med Navigator. Let the office know if this is the type of appointment you seek so they can schedule you correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have already seen another doctor for my problem. Can I still come to see you?

Yes.

Will I be able to get referrals for treatment or imaging or testing?

In the office consultation/assessment, you will understand your current status and the options for other testing, imaging or referrals.  Referrals can be given at the time of your appointment for those needs determined related to recovery and with evidence based outcomes.  Our goal is to help you navigate your options, proceed with further testing, imaging, or treatment referrals if needed for optimal outcomes.  In your contractual relationship with your insurance, further imaging or treatment may need prior authorization; we are not knowledgeable about what your individual insurance requires.

Since Sports Med Navigator is self-pay, are you a concierge practice with additional fees?

No, we are not a concierge practice. There are no additional fees except the fee for the visit – services provided in the appointment time are not billed separately. At this time, there is not a membership fee, and no additional fee for dry needling, trigger point injections, therapeutic exercise or strapping/taping if completed during your visit time slot.
